I have been lucky to be asked to contribute two original pieces of art to Mini Masterpieces, an exhibition of original postcard sized art work. The exhibition is held in conjunction with the North East Art Collective in order to raise funds for Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland. The charity is run for women by women and is the longest standing Rape Crisis centre in the country.
Violence against women matters. I believe, like Gloria Steinem, that sexual and domestic violence against women is the original violence. It is the violence from which all other forms of violence originate. It is where the dynamics of dominance and passivity, abuse and powerlessness are witnessed and experienced by children. It is the root of all forms of oppression, war and inequality. It has consequences, not just for the victims, but for all of us.
I thought I would show you some of the inspiration for the cards.
The exhibition opens 7 November and runs through December. The postcards will be sold via a silent auction. If you would like to see the postcards and find out more about the exhibition please visit www.rctn.com.
