Happy New Year! Here is a new painting I painted over the Christmas period. Like many of my paintings, I am working with expressing the kinds of feelings that fashion images bring up in me, the fantasies they give rise to, the ways in which they attach to my own sense of the world and my own memories. I generally work with fashion photographs, and I realised as I started to paint this picture, that the way the model in the photograph walked, her posture and the impression of her movement reminded me of the wayI have felt sometimes walking home alone after a night out. There is always a strangeness to walking home as a woman after a certain time. There is a beauty to being along at that time of night, of the quiet, the stars, the moonlight. But there is also a sense of vulnerability, that you are not safe. You feel the need to walk like you're invincible while knowing you're not. That feeling is what this painting is about.
